Organic Agriculture Explained

Organic farming is a way of agriculture that was the only way of growing crops until about a century ago. With the coming of industrial farming and the intensive use of chemicals, organic farming is not the mainstream method of agriculture in most countries, but an alternative to mainstream farming.

Organic farming is catching on once again as we begin to realise the importance of maintaining the ecological balance and begin to realise how much we have to lose, should we lose the health of arable land. Everything from Home Insurance to gardening implements is available online, and it is possible to find a good guide to organic gardening and food growing online.

Different crops can be grown at different times and this is what crop rotation is all about. Monoculture is the farming of just one crop on a field, and this can make the soil unhealthy and reduce its fertility. Organic agriculture recognises the importance of crop rotation in keeping the soil healthy.

Traditional knowledge of agriculture such as crop rotation and organic fertilising are used in organic farming. Organic agriculture makes use only of non invasive methods of pest control such as biological herbicides and pesticides.

Chemical pesticides, insecticides and other non organic practises such as using antibiotics, or genetic modification are not considered a part of organic agriculture. As such, organic farming focuses not on maximum yield at any cost, but on maintaining the health of the soil and the eco system of the farm.
